Girls Night Out - May 2008 “I’ve been to a marvelous party”…… Saturday 31st May twelve of us met at the Kruitmolen Party Centrum in Middelburg to enjoy an hour of bowling before eating. With some trepidation I arrived with fond memories of my first employment after leaving school (I digress but bear with me) This was an American company (J.I. Case & Co – tractor manufacturers) Ten Pin Bowling was a new form of sport/entertainment from across the big waters and was sweeping across Great Britain with lanes opening in major cities. After a few months working for the company I was inviting to join several of the employees for a practice evening with the company bowling team and later, after they had sussed out my capabilities, I was invited to became a member of the team. Being a cheeky young trainee receptionist/telephonist I took advantage of my situation and when the American Director paid a flying visit to Yorkshire I broached the possibility of having company shirts for our team to wear. Within a short period Mr La Mont kept his promise and a package arrived from the States, from then on the team played in snazzy pale blue shirts with blazing company Eagle emblems across our backs. We were in business and looked proper “Bobby Dazzlers” when playing in our local league…. So memories now put aside I am back in the Kruitmolen centrum, and reality sank in. I realised that the knees were not bending as easily as they did, the balls seemed so so heavy and the eyes couldn’t really see the pins at the end of the lane.. but that didn’t seem to matter we all enjoyed ourselves and the laughter ringing from our two lanes echoed around the building proved that fact. The hour went by so quickly and we then progressed into the restaurant for our stone grill experience. It didn’t seem to mater that we were the only group in the restaurant because we were sensibly seated around a huge square table. It was very comfortable being able see and speak to everyone. Crowning glory was the Ice Cake with blazing fireworks for the Birthday Girls. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed myself and after a “Radox” bath the next day, to ease the joints, I am raring to have another go on the lanes… anyone interested in maybe forming a WIGZ Bowling Group????
